About Topiary Plants
Gardens with topiary and ornamental plant trimming date back to Ancient Egypt and Rome. In our region, this art form developed during the reign of Peter the Great, when palaces were built in the style of Versailles with formal parks around them.Topiary pruning not only accentuates the ceremonial part of a garden but also plays a key role in creating private, secluded zones such as garden rooms, bosquets, and hedges.Stand-alone topiary specimens, such as bonsai, have also gained popularity and affection in modern gardens.
What Plants Are Used for Topiary?
Topiary compositions are typically made from small-leaved plants. The larger the leaves and the sparser the foliage, the more space the topiary requires. For example, a small-leaved linden with a cubical crown or an elm arbor may suit parks, while in smaller gardens it's better to use honeysuckle, Thunberg's barberry, western and eastern thuja of various varieties, common hawthorn, spirea, junipers, false cypress, yew, boxwood, and others.
Plant Classification for Topiary
There is a classification of plants suitable for topiary pruning:
Specimens with shaped crowns (deciduous and coniferous)
Plants for figurative shaping (tall, medium, low)
Plants for trimmed walls (screens)
Plants for hedges (thorny or non-thorny, deciduous or evergreen, of various heights)
In Bulgaria, the best topiary plants for specimen plantings are coniferous evergreens that remain decorative year-round – such as Thuja occidentalis 'Smaragd', Thuja orientalis 'Aurea Nana', or junipers (e.g., Juniperus virginiana 'Skyrocket'). For sculptural pruning, you can use evergreen boxwood, small-leaved holly, or yew.
When to Prune?
To maintain shape, pruning should be done regularly – but not in winter, as the plant should prepare for dormancy, not expend energy on new growth. For hedges, you can use garden shears or hedge trimmers to remove large volumes of growth. For more delicate shaping – such as espalier, specimen trees, or bonsai – use pruners to cut each branch individually above a bud facing inward.Cut surfaces should be treated to promote healing.Spring is the best time for pruning. It is recommended to start shaping plants at the age of five (when the root system is well-developed) and to remove no more than one-third of the green mass at a time.
How to Prune?
Templates can be used to maintain the original shape accurately. The ideal hedge shape is wider at the base and narrower at the top so that the lower branches receive enough light.This art form requires both investment in creating the shapes and regular maintenance to keep them looking perfect.
